Distance between the planets

We placed the planets in order from the sun. The hard part was thinking about the distance from each other and if they were evenly spaced. If not, we had to consider and research if any planets were closer to each other and by how much. Great maths and thinking about scale!

Back From Camp: Term 2 Week 2 update

Hello all,
We are back from camp and had a great time. Fab students, fab weather, fab food, great venue and fun activities made for an all round top camp.

This week:

  • Maths Cross grouping: we have started maths cross grouping across the senior school. All classes will now being doing a numeracy hour immediately after morning tea and students may be working in different classes than their home room for maths in order to best meet students learning needs. Please feel free to come and find out more information if you have any questions.
  • The maths strand topic across the school is Statistics.
  • Our RE focus continues to be the Holy Spirit (with a focus on the Holy Spirit in the Scriptures)
  • Tech - back to normal this week (tomorrow) so covered shoes please
  • Class Mass. We will be attending 10 am Mass on Friday buddied with R6. We would love any parents/caregivers to join us
  • Term 2 school value: Love and Service. We will link our topic/inquiry into this by thinking about our passions (loves) and working on passion projects. We will also be journaling and reflecting on the service we give to others and giving thanks for the service others do for us.
Homework:
  • All maths classes have Mathsbuddy. The more you complete the better you will be. Aim for 30 - 60 minutes a night
  • Reading. Please continue with reading novels and books of interest and record in your reading log. The school library is presently closed. There are plenty of places to find a good book - the public library, duffy books, class book corner, etc. I also have plenty of books if you need something new
  • Start to research a passion of yours. What is your inquiry question going to be? What information are you going to share and how? What skills are you going to teach us?
Miss Goodier

Confidence Course

The Confidence Course

Feeling scared to be the second one to do the course. I held onto the rope as tightly as I could. I swung to the net and grabbed onto it. I started to crawl across the wiggling wooden bridge.

Suddenly I fell off the bridge into the freezing, muddy water. I got up onto the ladder to reach the tyres. The tyres were the hardest thing on the course. They started to wobble once I got onto them. Then suddenly I fell into the freezing, cold water the second time.

I walked across a thick rope to reach the end of the course. Finally I reached the end which meant climbing over another net. I come out soaking wet with mud all over me. Then we got to have some fun and go down the massive water slide near the pond.

Balance Island

Intense Balancing Island

I was shivering while I walked along the thick wooden log. I was feeling anxious about falling into the freezing cold lake as if we were above the Atlantic Ocean with sticks barely poking out of the water below. While walking across the log I felt as if I going to fall but I had courage to get past. When I took the last step on the log I made it to the island where Mrs Kopua was waiting. I felt relieved for a second, but next it was the long unbalanced wobbly bridge!
When walking across the rickety bridge I took a big step one by one slowly but surely and soon enough I had reached the other side. Feeling more nervous than before, I looked up ahead and saw two, long, slim, parallel ropes and one of my friends who had just finished walking across the rope.
“It’s your turn,” said Mrs Kopua.
I took one step and thought to myself “you can do it, you can do it.”
In no time I was on the other end of the ropes feeling relaxed after that intense course.

Camp Recount

Go Karts
Swiftly I headed down the narrow hill. I yanked the rope to turn left and instantly I flipped over in what felt like slow motion. I fell in on the grass onto the track. I got up, dusted myself off then had a little laugh. I felt a bit sore and embarrassed. As I was speaking I looked up and another girl came down and didn’t even flinch. I waited for my turn again and when everybody else had finished I took the kart and walked back up the hill.
“Do you know what you did wrong?” asked Mr Evans.
I shrugged my shoulders.
He said “You yanked it really fast when you are supposed to pull it slowly.”
I giggled and said “Can I go again, on the same level?”
He said confidently, “ Nope you're going to the next one.”
I sighed, “Okayyyy” I said.
We walked to the next level, level 2. I turned around as I dragged the kart and looked down. It was really high.
I turned back around and thought to myself “If I couldn’t make the first level, how can I make the second ?”
We finally got to the second level. I put my kart in place with Mr Evans’ foot behind the tyre. I sat on the sponge and held the rope tightly. Mr Evans slowly moved his foot away then pushed me down the track. I held the rope tightly and when the time came I gently tugged the rope and I had done it. I had finally made it without  tumbling over.

Holy Week

This week is a very special week for us. It is Holy Week. We are walking with Jesus and reflecting on his final week before he was crucified. We have researched the order and meaning of the events from Palm Sunday to Easter Sunday and where they occured in the old city of Jerusalem. We have also reflected on the Stations of the Cross which occurred on Good Friday. We thought about who we would be if we were in the crowd that followed Jesus in his passion. Am I Simon who was forced to go to Jesus? Am I Veronica whose love was so strong that she risked her safety to help Jesus? Am I am in the crowd as a believer or a doubter? Am I Simon Peter who believed but then denied?

End of Term 1 Community

The end of Term 1 has arrived already. We have had a busy term with a focus on our value respect and community. At the end to our topic of inquiry the students were asked to research and share a presentation on a community they are part of outside of our class and school. It has been really exciting to see a part of the student lives outside school. Here is one example of a community that Salem belongs to outside school
